It wasn’t until I started looking for things to write about in this blog, that it dawned on me how many Christmas-related items we collect. As I was putting up my Christmas tree and getting out all the ornaments I’ve used for years, I realized that I’d created several smaller collections of my own.
When my mom passed away, I got all of her Christmas ornaments. I went through and kept a few I knew meant a lot to her and a few I’d remembered from my own childhood. I found ornaments that had hung on my grandparents tree and a couple my grandmother and I had made ourselves. I had to keep those and will pass them along to my kids.
As I was setting out my Christmas decorations, I began to think about all the different things people collect for the holidays. A friend of mine collects Father Christmas figurines and ornaments. She has a few that stand nearly 3-feet tall. Her home always has that feel of an old-world celebration.
As I said in my last post, my mother collected angels. She even had an angel tree-topper that perched atop her Christmas tree every year. It didn’t matter what the rest of the tree looked like to her, as long as that angel took center stage.
Another thing I noticed I’d accumulated were the handmade Christmas ornaments that my kids and grandkids had made over the years. Construction paper angels and hand-painted salt dough ornaments still grace the branches of my artificial tree. It wouldn’t be Christmas without them.
I’ve never been the type of person to go all out and decorate every part of my house at Christmas, but I’m in awe of those who do. We used to drive by the house of a gentleman who put up Christmas lights every year, adding a new piece each time. It became a community sensation with everyone trying to figure out what piece had been added.
Collecting Christmas ornaments has become big business. It amazes me just how many different items are produced to help celebrate the season. I just bought a friend of mine a glass pickle ornament the other day as she collects pickle-related items. She giggled and said she couldn’t wait to get it up on her tree.
What do you collect around the holidays? Do you collect specific Christmas ornaments or do you prefer the handmade type? Whatever you collect to make your home a little merrier, I pray it brings you joy.
Thank you for stopping by and I hope to have more stuff to bring you in the coming year.
From my house to yours,
Merry Christmas
